We often speak about innovation as if it were light.
A new idea appears, a product is launched, a company scales, a market shifts. The vocabulary around technology is full of movement: acceleration, disruption, transformation. It gives the impression that progress now belongs mainly to speed, to those who can move first, iterate quickly, and accept that everything stable is already half obsolete.
There is truth in this. Speed matters. Software has compressed distance, time, and cost in ways that would have seemed improbable not so long ago. Artificial intelligence is now changing how we work, analyse, create, and make decisions. Small teams can reach markets that once required large institutions. Talent can travel further than geography used to allow.
I do not doubt any of this. But I have also learned, especially through my work in telecommunications, infrastructure, and now as CEO of NEQSOL Holding, that speed is only one part of the story.
The other part is support.
The digital economy often presents itself as almost weightless. We speak about the cloud, platforms, applications, and models as if they exist somewhere above the physical world. In reality, they depend on some of the heaviest and most demanding systems we have ever built: fibre networks, data centres, energy grids, submarine cables, regulatory frameworks, capital discipline, and skilled people who maintain complex systems when nobody is watching.
The cloud does not float. It is built.
This may sound obvious, but obvious things are often the first to be forgotten. When systems work well, they disappear from attention. Nobody thinks about fibre until the connection fails. Nobody thinks about electricity until there is not enough of it. Nobody thinks about logistics until something does not arrive. Infrastructure becomes visible only at the moment it disappoints us.
That invisibility is both the success and the burden of infrastructure.
It is also why I find this field so interesting. Infrastructure has a certain honesty. It does not respond well to slogans. It cannot be persuaded by fashion. It requires patience, coordination, maintenance, and responsibility over long periods of time. A network, a grid, a cable under the sea; these things are not built for the news cycle. They are built because someone believes the future will need them before the future has fully arrived.
There is something quietly courageous in that.
Artificial intelligence has made this question more visible. We rightly discuss what AI can produce, optimise, predict, or transform. But beneath every impressive demonstration lies a chain of dependencies: compute, energy, connectivity, security, talent, regulation, and trust. Remove one of these layers and the most advanced technology becomes fragile very quickly.
Energy, in particular, can no longer be treated as a background input. For a long time, parts of the digital economy behaved as if power would simply be there; reliable, scalable, and politically neutral. That assumption is becoming harder to sustain. If we want advanced digital societies, we need to think about energy from the beginning, not as an afterthought.
The same is true of connectivity. A better-connected region is not only faster online. It is better positioned to participate in flows of knowledge, education, services, capital, and cultural exchange. This is not an abstract point for me. I have seen how access – to language, education, culture, institutions – can widen a person’s horizon. Infrastructure does something similar, but at the scale of societies. It transmits possibility.
Perhaps this is why I am drawn to projects that are patient by nature. They do not always produce immediate applause. They require permits, negotiations, engineering, investment, and resilience. They demand trust between people who may have different interests but a shared need to build something that lasts. In a world that celebrates speed, there is still dignity in the long route.
Geography also matters more than we sometimes admit. For a period, digital language encouraged the idea that place was becoming less important. Everything could be remote, distributed, virtual. In some ways, of course, this is true. But the foundations of the digital world have made geography important again: routes, corridors, energy sources, political stability, and regional cooperation all shape what becomes possible.
At NEQSOL, where our businesses touch telecommunications, energy, infrastructure, and technology, this is not a theoretical conversation. It is part of the work. The question is not only how quickly new technologies can be adopted, but whether the systems around them are strong enough to carry them. That question is less glamorous than many discussions about innovation, but it is often more decisive.
I sometimes think that the word “innovation” has become too closely associated with novelty. Newness is exciting, but it is not enough. A thing is truly innovative only when it can endure, when it can serve people at scale, when it can be trusted not only in a presentation but in daily life.
A brilliant product that cannot be supported by the world around it is not yet a transformation. It is a promise waiting for foundations.
This is where leadership becomes less about performance and more about responsibility. One has to hold two timeframes at once. There is the immediate rhythm of markets, technology, customers, and competition. And there is the slower rhythm of infrastructure, institutions, people, and trust. To ignore the first is naïve. To ignore the second is dangerous.
The best companies, like the best societies, learn to live in both.
This is also why I am cautious about purely celebratory language around the future. I am optimistic, but optimism should not be confused with lightness. Real optimism is demanding. It requires building. It requires maintenance. It requires the humility to understand that ideas alone do not change the world unless the world is capable of receiving them.
Innovation needs imagination, but it also needs carrying capacity.
History reminds us of this again and again. Railways, electricity, sanitation, telecommunications; each transformed society not only because it was new, but because it became dependable. Dependability is not a fashionable word. It is, however, one of the highest achievements of civilisation.
Perhaps the next phase of innovation will be decided not only in laboratories, start-ups, or code, but in the patient work beneath them: the networks, grids, institutions, and partnerships that allow new ideas to become part of ordinary life.
There is no contradiction between speed and patience. The best progress usually needs both. Speed gives movement. Patience gives depth. Speed opens possibilities. Patience turns them into institutions.
The future will still reward imagination. But imagination alone will not be enough. It will also reward those who understand weight: the weight of energy, infrastructure, trust, regulation, and responsibility.
Innovation is never weightless. The question is whether we are prepared to build what it needs to stand.
